Discover the life of Joseph Albright: Madeleine Albright’s Husband and Renowed Journalist

Joseph Medill Patterson Albright, (aged 86 years old) Madeleine Albright’s former husband, is a prominent journalist and member of the respected Medill-Patterson publishing dynasty. Joseph Albright, born Joseph Medill Patterson Reeve in New Orleans on April 3, 1937, to lawyer Jay Frederick “Fred” Reeve and reporter-pilot Josephine Medill Patterson, underwent a complex upbringing.

His parents’ divorce in 1944 led to Josephine’s marriage to painter Ivan Le Lorraine Albright in 1946, resulting in Joseph and his sister Alice adopting the Albright surname. Josephine chronicled his life in a weekly column called “Life with Junior.” He attended Groton School before studying at Williams College.

A descendant of a newspaper dynasty, his family tree boasts impressive names: Joseph Medill Patterson founded the New York Daily News, and Eleanor “Cissy” Patterson edited the Washington Times-Herald. Albright’s great-great-grandfather, Joseph Medill, owned the Chicago Tribune and was Chicago’s mayor.

His aunt Alicia Patterson, founder of Newsday, held high hopes for Joseph or Alice to succeed her as publisher. After interning at the Denver Post, Joseph met fellow intern Madeleine Jana Korbel, whom he married in 1959. They had three daughters before divorcing in 1983.

Joseph embarked on a journalism career, including stints at the Chicago Sun-Times and Newsday. He worked closely with his uncle Harry F. Guggenheim and reported from New York and Washington, D.C. He even served as a legislative aide to Senator Edmund Muskie.

Joseph and Madeleine met when the two were students at Wellesley College. Their passionate love story began shortly after their paths crossed in college, culminating in a wedding ceremony in 1959. The couple had a solid, some might say enviable, relationship spanning nearly twenty-five years, but it eventually ended in divorce in 1982.
