Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier is a gripping tale of mystery and suspense set in 19th century Cornwall. It follows the story of Mary Yellan, who uncovers dark secrets and dangerous plots at the eerie and remote Jamaica Inn.
In Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier, we are introduced to Mary Yellan, a young woman who is forced to move to Jamaica Inn in Cornwall after the death of her mother. Her mother's last wish was for Mary to live with her Aunt Patience and Uncle Joss Merlyn. Mary arrives at the inn only to find it in a state of disrepair and her aunt in a state of nervousness, while her uncle is a menacing figure. Mary soon learns that her uncle is the landlord of the inn and is involved in smuggling activities.
As Mary tries to adjust to her new life at Jamaica Inn, she is increasingly disturbed by the criminal activities taking place there. Her uncle is a brutal man, and her aunt seems to be living in a state of constant fear. Mary's resolve to help her aunt and put an end to her uncle's activities grows stronger.
Mary soon discovers that the inn is a cover for a much larger smuggling operation, and her uncle is the leader of the group. She is shocked to learn the extent of the criminal activities taking place right under her nose. Her aunt, Patience, is a mere shadow of her former self, cowed by her husband's violent behavior.
As Mary continues to uncover the secrets of Jamaica Inn, she also meets Jem Merlyn, her uncle's younger brother. Jem is a horse thief and a smuggler, but he seems to have a kinder and more honorable nature than his brother. Mary is conflicted about her growing feelings for Jem, knowing that he is involved in illegal activities.
Events come to a head when Mary's uncle, Joss, decides to kill her for interfering in his affairs. With the help of Jem, Mary escapes from Jamaica Inn. They take refuge in the moors, and it is here that Jem confesses to Mary that he is not as bad as his brother and that he has been trying to stop the criminal activities at Jamaica Inn.
Meanwhile, Joss's criminal activities are exposed, and he is killed by his own men. Jem decides to leave the country to escape the law, and despite her feelings for him, Mary does not go with him. Instead, she returns to her aunt to help her start a new life. The novel ends with Mary determined to rebuild her life and her aunt's, leaving behind the dark and dangerous world of Jamaica Inn.
