Blink 3 of 8 - The 5 AM Club
by Robin Sharma
The Long Walk by Stephen King is a gripping dystopian novel that follows the harrowing journey of 100 teenage boys as they participate in a brutal walking competition where the stakes are life and death.
In The Long Walk by Stephen King, we are taken to a dystopian America where an annual event known as The Long Walk is held. The competition involves a group of teenage boys who must walk continuously at a speed of four miles per hour until only one of them remains. The winner is granted any wish they desire, while the rest face death. The protagonist, Ray Garraty, is one of the participants, and we follow him as he embarks on this harrowing journey.
As the boys start their walk, they are accompanied by military personnel who enforce the rules, which are strict and unforgiving. They stop only for brief rest breaks and to relieve themselves. Any participant who falls below the required speed or breaks any other rule is given a warning. After three warnings, they are shot dead. The group is also constantly monitored by a crowd of spectators, who cheer and place bets on the boys, treating the event as a form of entertainment.
As the walk progresses, the physical and psychological toll on the boys becomes increasingly apparent. They endure exhaustion, hunger, and blisters on their feet. Many of them begin to hallucinate or lose their grip on reality. The camaraderie at the start of the walk gives way to a grim understanding that only one of them will survive. Despite this, the boys form alliances, each trying to survive by any means necessary, even if it means sacrificing their friends.
Throughout the journey, Ray Garraty forms a close bond with another walker named Peter McVries. They share their fears, hopes, and dreams, and their friendship becomes a source of strength for both of them. However, they also realize that their friendship is temporary, as only one of them can emerge as the winner.
As the walk enters its final stages, the desperation among the walkers reaches a fever pitch. Many of them have been eliminated, and the remaining few are on the brink of physical and mental collapse. The military personnel accompanying the walkers become increasingly brutal, enforcing the rules with little regard for the boys' well-being. The spectators, too, become bloodthirsty, urging the walkers to kill each other in a bid to survive.
Amidst this chaos, Ray and Peter continue their journey, their friendship tested to its limits. They are joined by two other walkers, Stebbins and Baker, who are equally desperate to win. The group's dynamics become increasingly volatile, with alliances shifting and betrayals becoming more frequent.
As the walk nears its end, only Ray and Peter remain. They are both physically and mentally drained, but their determination to survive keeps them going. The military personnel and the spectators are eager for the final showdown, and the boys are pushed to their limits, with the threat of death looming over them.
In the end, Peter, unable to continue, deliberately steps off the road and is shot by the soldiers. Ray, now the last walker, is declared the winner. However, instead of making a wish, he refuses the prize, realizing the hollowness of victory in such a brutal competition. The novel ends with Ray walking into the distance, haunted by the memories of The Long Walk, and questioning the society that allowed such a horrifying event to exist.
