The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie is a classic detective novel that introduces the brilliant Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Set in an English country estate, it is a tale of murder, deception, and a cleverly hidden killer.
In The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written by Agatha Christie, we are introduced to Captain Arthur Hastings, who has been invalided out of the Great War and is staying at Styles Court with his old friend John Cavendish and his family. Mrs. Inglethorp, John's stepmother, is a wealthy widow and the owner of Styles Court. She has recently remarried a much younger man, Alfred Inglethorp, which has caused a great deal of tension within the family.
One night, Mrs. Inglethorp dies in suspicious circumstances, and it soon becomes clear that she has been poisoned. Hastings, intrigued by the case, calls upon an acquaintance, Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian detective who has been a refugee in England since the invasion of his country by the Germans. Poirot takes on the case, using his 'little grey cells' and his methodical approach to crime-solving to unravel the mystery.
As Poirot investigates, he uncovers a web of secrets and lies within the Inglethorp household. There are multiple suspects, including John Cavendish, who stands to inherit his stepmother's fortune; his brother Lawrence, who has been behaving strangely and has a strained relationship with his stepmother; and Mary Cavendish, John's wife, who is rumored to have a romantic interest in another man.
Alfred Inglethorp, Mrs. Inglethorp's much younger husband, is also a prime suspect, especially after it is revealed that he has a strained relationship with his wife and stands to gain financially from her death. Poirot also discovers that Inglethorp has been buying large quantities of a particular brand of strychnine, the poison used to kill Mrs. Inglethorp.
As the investigation progresses, Poirot uncovers further evidence that points to Alfred Inglethorp as the murderer. However, things take a surprising turn when Inglethorp's alibi is confirmed, and he is no longer a suspect. Poirot then realizes that he has been focusing on the wrong suspect and decides to re-examine the case from a different angle.
With the help of Hastings, Poirot stages a dramatic revelation in the courtroom, where he exposes the true murderer. The murderer turns out to be none other than Evelyn Howard, Mrs. Inglethorp's dedicated and seemingly innocent companion. Howard's motive was the fear that Mrs. Inglethorp would change her will, leaving her out of her substantial inheritance.
In the end, the murderer's plan is foiled, and justice is served. Mrs. Inglethorp's considerable wealth is left to her stepsons, John and Lawrence Cavendish, and Styles Court remains in the family's possession. Poirot, satisfied with the successful resolution of the case, bids farewell to Hastings, leaving him with the cryptic promise of more adventures to come.
In conclusion, The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a classic example of Agatha Christie's talent for crafting intricate plots, complex characters, and unexpected twists. The novel introduces us to the brilliant detective Hercule Poirot and sets the stage for many more thrilling mysteries to come in Christie's extensive body of work.
