In Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake, we are introduced to the island of Fennbirn, a land ruled by a matriarchal society. Mirabella, the eldest, is an elemental who can control the elements. She is raised by the powerful and influential priestesses. Meanwhile, Katharine, the middle sister, is a poisoner and is raised by the poisoners who are adept at creating and handling poisons. The youngest, Arsinoe, is a naturalist with the ability to control plants and animals. She is raised by the naturalists who live on the outskirts of the island and are considered the least powerful.
The Struggle for Power
As the sisters grow, they are taught to harness their powers and prepare for the Ascension Year, the year they turn sixteen and the battle for the throne begins. Mirabella, who is the most powerful of the three, is expected to easily win the crown. Katharine, on the other hand, is weak and unable to ingest the poisons her faction creates, making her an underdog. Arsinoe, despite being a naturalist, struggles to summon any form of magic, making her the least promising candidate.
As the Ascension Year progresses, the sisters' bond is tested as they are forced to compete against each other. Mirabella, who has the support of the powerful priestesses, initially refuses to kill her sisters. Katharine, desperate to prove herself, starts consuming more and more toxic substances to build her immunity. Arsinoe, with the help of her friends, attempts to find a way to summon her powers.
Twists and Betrayals
At the midpoint of the book, a series of revelations dramatically alter the sisters' understanding of their world. Arsinoe discovers that she has been switched at birth with another girl, Jules, who is actually the naturalist. Katharine, after consuming a dangerous amount of poison, is believed to be dead. Meanwhile, the political tensions on the island escalate as the factions begin to manipulate the sisters to further their own agendas.
