Doctor Sleep by Stephen King is a gripping thriller that follows the now-adult Dan Torrance as he uses his psychic abilities to help dying patients. However, he soon finds himself in a battle against a cult that feeds on children with the same gift.
In Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, we are reintroduced to Dan Torrance, the young boy from The Shining, who has grown up to be a troubled adult. Dan, now an alcoholic like his father, struggles with his psychic abilities, which he calls 'the shining'. He moves to a small town, where he joins Alcoholics Anonymous and starts working at a hospice, using his powers to help dying patients pass away peacefully, earning him the nickname 'Doctor Sleep'.
As Dan begins to rebuild his life, he starts receiving telepathic messages from a young girl named Abra Stone, who also possesses the shining. Abra's powers are even stronger than Dan's, and she has attracted the attention of a group of psychic vampires called the True Knot. This group feeds on the 'steam' produced by children with the shining when they are tortured and killed, and they have set their sights on Abra.
When the True Knot murder a young boy with the shining, Abra reaches out to Dan for help. Together, they form a plan to confront and defeat the True Knot. Dan, Abra, and a few allies, including Dan's AA sponsor, Billy, and a cat named Azzie, who can sense the True Knot, set out to stop the group from capturing and torturing Abra.
As the group tracks down the True Knot, they discover that the group's leader, Rose the Hat, is a formidable adversary. She is able to sense Dan and Abra's approach and sets a trap for them. However, Dan and Abra manage to turn the tables on the True Knot, using their combined powers to kill most of the group and destroy their base of operations.
In the final showdown, Dan sacrifices himself to save Abra from Rose the Hat. He manages to lock Rose in his mind, using his shining to trap her in an imaginary version of the Overlook Hotel. Dan dies from his injuries, but not before he and Abra share a final telepathic conversation, where he tells her to live her life to the fullest and not let her powers consume her.
After Dan's death, Abra returns to her normal life, but she is forever changed by her experiences. She continues to use her powers to help others, just as Dan did. The novel ends with Abra visiting the site of the Overlook Hotel, where she feels Dan's presence and thanks him for everything he did for her.
