The unrivaled power of magic

From an early age, RuPaul sensed something special and magical within himself, even though his family and underprivileged neighborhood in San Diego didn't reflect that feeling. Television represented an ideal reality where magic triumphed, with every actor playing their role to ensure good overcame evil. In the real world, everyone played roles too, but it wasn't openly acknowledged.

RuPaul's awakening to this magic and the individual's role in it came when his sister Renetta organized a backyard picnic for the two of them. He was only five years old, but the lesson stuck: magic is a choice that must be actively created. By spreading out a blanket on the grass, serving peanut butter cookies, and framing it as a ceremony, Renetta had created a magical experience.

This experience laid the foundation for RuPaul to understand that he could manifest his own magic by transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. While some are born with an innate sense of magic, the key is developing the ability to harness and channel that magic through spontaneity and intention.

There are two roles in bringing magic to life: the maker, who facilitates and shapes the experience, and the beneficiary, who immerses themselves in the magic. Life as a misfit

RuPaul grew up in a neighborhood where everyone knew their place and didn't aspire to much more. This didn't discourage his taste for the finer things in life, though. He thoroughly enjoyed his first plane ride and soon made a habit of taking the bus to the beach. After one such trip, the neighborhood kids confronted him as if he’d done something wrong.

His sense of being different extended beyond his love for adventure. He soon realized he had feelings for Lamar, a boy who was exceptionally kind to him. Though curious about the world, RuPaul wasn't particularly keen on school. His grades suffered, and his mother accepted his sister Renetta's offer to let RuPaul live with her and her husband Gerald. So, he moved with the couple to Atlanta.

The paradox of community

After years of feeling like an outsider, a local public access TV show called The American Music Show provided RuPaul with his first glimpse of finding a tribe. The show's irreverent, punk attitude and the producers' willingness to satirize mainstream culture resonated deeply with him. Writing in to get on the show opened a door to connecting with kindred spirits.

This oddball crew of artists, bohemians, and gender rebels embraced RuPaul wholeheartedly. Experimenting with acid for the first time catalyzed a rebirth into the authentic life he had longed for. And making friends solidified a profound sense of belonging after a lifetime of alienation.

“RuPaul is Everything”

Having found a sense of belonging in the underground art scene, RuPaul still possessed an undeniable singularity that set him apart. Instead of fighting it, he made cultivating a distinctive personal brand a priority from early on. This would transcend just being a talented performer to becoming an iconic figure people could rally around.

Taking inspiration from pioneering artists like David Bowie and Andy Warhol, RuPaul adopted a subversive, transgressive aesthetic that didn't take itself too seriously. He injected wit, irreverence, and casual rule-breaking into his self-expression. This differentiated him from conventional drag acts and aligned with the punk ethos of his bohemian circles.

RuPaul Superstar

Having cultivated a unique brand blending provocative self-expression with savvy marketing, RuPaul's big break arrived when he was signed to Tommy Boy Records. The debut single "Supermodel (You Better Work)" made him a pioneering mainstream success as a drag queen, introducing middle America to concepts of gender fluidity.

RuPaul's ability to repackage the underground queer art scene's raunchy, transgressive spirit into something whimsical and family-friendly struck a chord.
